Lilies are possibly one of the most beautiful of all the flowers because of their slender stems and their opulent petals. They come in a wide variety of types and colors, but no matter which variety you love they would make an ideal theme for your next garden party or outdoor celebration.

The History of the Lily

Lilies are one of the oldest flowers in Western Civilization. Some accounts claim that the earlier variety was recorded in ancient Summer nearly 5,000 years ago. Varieties of lilies have even grown in famous gardens, such as Charlemagnes. In fact, lilies were so prized in the past that they were viewed as having bloomed from the milk of Hera, the Greek queen of the gods and wife of Zeus.

In more recent times, the lily has become particularly associated with Christianity. The white lily is often considered a symbol for the purity of the Virgin Mary who gave birth to Jesus. That may be one reason the Easter Lily is a popular variety of this flower.

Lilies aren't just popular in the West, however. Both China and Japan have strong connections with the lily and have even brought some of their varieties to the West where they now make up beautiful bouquets of their own.

Obviously, the easiest use of lilies at your party is as centerpieces. Beautiful lilies in pots or vases can be gorgeous adornments to any table. You can even add more flair with colored ribbons that match or accentuate the color of the petals.

If you don't want to have them as centerpieces or if your lilies aren't fully bloomed yet, then you can purchase artificial ones at most craft stores. These can either be used in bouquets or they can be placed in actual pots to resemble real lilies. Then you can use them in your decoration any way you desire.
